about

Like most Old-time (Traditional) music, history is spotty and largely anecdotal. This tune was first mentioned in a Civil War veteran’s diary entry in 1870 (mudcat.org). Its inspirations range from the 1850s Georgia gold rush to Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s campaign/march across the state to a corral of wild horses breaking free, escaping into the night. I heard that last story from an Old-timer across a campfire at Clifftop. For centuries, this Traditional Music method of passing down history has happened in community settings everywhere. That’s why it’s still here!
When playing this action-packed tune, Chris (a very visually-engaged musician) pictures a train rolling down the tracks. I picked up on the Old-timers Clifftop story and roll a movie of horses busting outa’ jail, running free. The scary parts (in a minor key) are where they escape. And the lopy, fun parts are where they’re frolicking, enjoying their new-found freedom. Chris’ guitar chops even sound like a happy horse shaking its mane. Listen! What story do these tunes play out for you?
